Physical Education Curriculum Intent

Knightlow recognises the fundamental importance of Physical Education in a child’s physical, social and emotional development. We fully support the Ofsted guidance that Physical Education should be a part of every child’s entitlement and as such it is our intention that every child experience a broad range of physical and sports opportunities in order to develop an outstanding level of physical literacy and the knowledge, skills and enjoyment that will ignite a life-long positive relationship with physical activity and sport.

Every child will experience a minimum of two hours high quality P.E. every week. Through the careful adaptation of the ‘Val Sabin’ scheme the children systematically develop skills and knowledge in gymnastics, a variety of games (including invasion, net, court, wall, striking and fielding) and dance. Our Outdoor and Adventurous curriculum is delivered by external providers through our outward-bounds residential visits to: Rock UK’s The Frontier Centre, Manor Adventure in Shropshire and Marle Hall Education Centre in North Wales across Key Stage Two. Swimming and life-saving skills are developed through swimming lessons in Year 1 and Year 4.

To further enhance our curriculum offer we work in close collaboration with both our local School Sports Partnership and SCCU accessing opportunities for curriculum enrichment from trained coaches. A number of our TAs are also PES trained and work to both support and lead the teaching and assessment of PE across the school. The principles of Building Learning Power are woven into all PE lessons along with the key messages of the importance of physical activity, fitness and stamina as part of a healthy lifestyle. The children learn about the physiology of their bodies when exercising and how to exercise safely. Physical activities are also interlaced through other areas of the curriculum to ensure our offer of Active 60, such as Maths of The Day or high-impact physical interludes.

As a Games Mark Gold school we fully recognise and uphold its core values of Passion, Self Belief, Respect, Honesty, Determination and Teamwork. These values are realised through a wide range of opportunities to compete at both intra and inter-school level, making strong links with both local and wider communities. In addition our extensive extra-curricular offer enables pupils to develop their individual physical skills, experience new/different activities and develop skills of collaboration and teamwork.

Leadership skills are also developed in all pupils as they work systematically to complete their Leadership Awards. Pupils in Year 2 and 6 are also trained to lead extra-curricular activities with younger children in their Key Stage during lunchtimes. Knightlow’s core Christian Values of Love, Hope, Joy and Forgiveness underpin all learning in and across the PE curriculum developing passion, determination, enjoyment and good sportspersonship.
